Kathmandu, November 2. Police on Monday morning evicted protesters associated with the Madhesh Movement from the Friendship Bridge in its bid to send Indian trucks stuck along Nepali territories to India.

The police act against the border protest, continuing for more than two months, has sparked fresh protest in Birgunj. There have been allegations that police attacked protesters while they were asleep.

The move will enable Indian truck drivers, stuck on Nepali territories for long, to return home. These drivers had been staging a sit-in outside the Indian consulate in Birgunj for a safe passage.

Madheshi protesters take Birgunj as the nerve centre of their protest. India also says Birgunj is critical for smooth supply of essentials to Nepal from India. Keeping these factors in mind, the government has removed obstructions from a major customs, a government source said.
