Parsa, December 30. Members of a ‘masked gang’ drove away Madheshi Morcha supporters enforcing a blockade on the Nepal-India border crossing in Birgunj, and made way for local traders to bring in goods from India, on Tuesday night.
“The protesters’ turnout has been low these days. Only 5-10 people show up,” said a local. “The traders come in large numbers and the protesters are rendered helpless.”
On Tuesday night the masked gang (the protesters call them ‘smugglers) vandalised motorcycles belonging to local leaders enforcing the blockade. The protesters say the ‘smugglers’ come in a group of 100-150. They say that police on both sides of the border are aiding the ‘smugglers’.
This is not the first time such an incident has happened. This has happened several times over the past few days. The protesters wait for the ‘smugglers’ to cross the Miteri Bridge, and then get back to enforcing the blockade.
