Birgunj, January 19. With the purported understanding with the three major parties — the Nepali Congress, CPN-UML and the UCPN-Maoist — nowhere near, the United Democratic Madheshi Front has restarted its movement in Birgunj, the major customs point along the Nepal-India border that accounts for more than 70 per cent of Nepal’s overseas trade.

On Tuesday, violence erupted again in the border town that had remained calm for about two weeks, with UDMF cadres staging protests in places like Ghanta Ghar and Maisthan by burning tyres.

Equipped with bamboo poles, these cadres have been enforcing Birgunj closure and vandalising vehicles, affecting vehicular movement.

Keshav Raj Ghimire, chief district officer of Parsa, said short-route vehicles are operating in Birgunj, while long-route vehicles remained off the road.

The UDMF had called off its general strike in Birgunj, based on an agreement reached at an all-party meeting.
