Kathmandu, October 28. From a communist cadre to the first woman President of the federal republic of Nepal, Bidhya Bhandari has come a long way.
Born to Ram Bahadur Pandey and Mithila Pandey in Manebhanjyang, Bhojpur, on June 19, 1958, Bhandari joined the communist movement as a student cadre by taking membership of the CPN (Marxist-Leninist) about 35 years ago.
She had her movements of triumphs and tragedies.
The leftist leader, a mother of two daughters, lost her husband, the charismatic communist leader and CPN-UML General Secretary Madan Bhandari, in an accident about two decades ago.

1993: Elected chief of women’s department, GEFONT
1997: Becomes Environment Minister

2010: Elected Defence Minister
