20,000 Indians of Maharajgunj district hold Nepali citizenship too: Report

Highlighting an issue that can have security repercussions for both Nepal and India, an Indian newspaper has reported that 20,000 Indians living in Maharajgunj district, which lies close to the Nepal-India border, also hold Nepali citizenship certificates issued in their names!

Kathmandu, November 17. Highlighting an issue that can have security repercussions for both Nepal and India, an Indian newspaper has reported that 20,000 Indians living in Maharajgunj district, which lies close to the Nepal-India border, also hold Nepali citizenship certificates issued in their names !  According to the NavBharat Times report, these 20,000 people live in 40 villages in Maharajgunj.

According to the newspaper, 1,000 Indians living in Sunauli village have Nepali citizenship.

The influence of those holding dual citizenship is increasing in the Lower House, the Upper House, Village Panchayat, District Panchayat and Regional Panchayat, the report states.

According to the report, those holding dual citizenships may cause problems to the Election Commission during local elections.

“Several people in Siddharthanagar, Balrampur, Bahraich, Gonda, Shravasti and Lakhimpur have acquired Nepali citizenship,” according to the paper.
